Julie Ryan McGue's anthology, Belonging Matters, offers a narrative where the pursuit of identity intersects with human connection. Through a collection of personal narratives, McGue explores the intricate themes of adoption, familial relationships, and the quest for belonging.
At the core of Belonging Matters lies McGue's own odyssey—a journey fueled by an innate yearning to uncover the essence of her identity. With unwavering honesty, McGue invites readers to embark on this transformative voyage alongside her, where the revelation of one's origins becomes a catalyst for introspection and personal growth.
The book resonates with authenticity, reading almost like a personal diary. It weaves together moments of vulnerability and resilience as McGue navigates the complexities of reuniting with her birth family. While deeply personal, the significance of Belonging Matters transcends its narrative. Through eloquent and empathetic prose, McGue illuminates the threads that bind us—the yearning for connection, the pursuit of meaning, and the power of love.
The anthology intricately portrays childhood experiences where McGue grappled with discomfort in her own skin as an adopted child. She delves into family reunions, Holidays, planting tulips, rejections, and the challenges of navigating through the COVID era. These stories, totaling over 70 "chapters," offer a comprehensive exploration of her life's story. Each chapter stands as a vignette, painting vivid snapshots of poignant moments, humorous anecdotes, and profound reflections. Moreover, McGue shares a poignant story about finding inspiration in an unexpected place—the ladies' room. This small anecdote encapsulates the essence of most of the stories—down-to-earth and seemingly mundane moments that hold profound meaning within the overall tapestry of her life.

FULL BOOK TITLE: Pigs in Paradise: A Fairy Story Most Absurd
AUTHOR NAME: Roger Maxson
PUBLISHER NAME: Tektime
LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Pigs-Paradise-Fairy-Story-Absurd/dp/8835429110/
Pigs in Paradise is a sharply concocted satire that skewers the unholy matrimony of religion and politics in modern America. Starring a ragtag bunch of farm animals, this novel exposes the perilous ascent of white Christian nationalism and the evangelical clamber for political clout. Through cleverness and cunning allegory, it lays bare the absurdities and hypocrisies of its real-world inspirations, leaving no sacred cow unmocked.
The story begins on a farm in Israel, where we meet Julius, a wise-cracking parrot whose non-religious stance and sardonic wit make him the voice of reason amidst a herd of increasingly zealous animals. The farm’s spiritual leader, Mel the mule, ascends to power by declaring himself Pope Magnificent—a sly nod to the paradox of a sterile mule taking on the celibate role of a Catholic pope. This clever character choice underscores the absurdity and irony often found in religious hierarchies.
The plot takes a pivotal turn with the birth of Lizzy, a “red calf,” an event that draws the attention of two American evangelical ministers. Their subsequent purchase of the animals and relocation to a “Christian” farm in Kansas marks the beginning of the novel’s deeper exploration into American evangelicalism. Here, the animals are subjected to 24/7 religious programming, creating a surreal and oppressive atmosphere that mirrors the often-overwhelming presence of religious rhetoric in American politics.
In Kansas, the tension between the animals’ innate instincts and the imposed religious dogma reaches a boiling point. The climax is both humorous and poignant, as the animals, led by the formidable Stanley, a black Belgian Stallion, rebel against their oppressive conditions. Stanley's act of kicking out the TV monitors symbolizes a brief but powerful moment of resistance and the desire for a semblance of peace and autonomy.
Pigs in Paradise is more than just a satire; it is a pointed commentary on the current socio-political climate. The narrative cleverly uses anthropomorphism to dissect complex issues, making it accessible and engaging. The animals’ journey from Israel to America and their subsequent struggle against imposed religious fervor serve as a potent metaphor for the universal quest for freedom and the dangers of ideological extremism.
The novel's strength lies in its ability to blend humor with serious critique. Julius’s cynical commentary and the absurdity of Mel’s papal aspirations provide a continuous thread of levity, while the underlying message remains clear and impactful. However, the novel occasionally veers into heavy-handedness, with some allegorical elements feeling a bit too on-the-nose. Yet, this does not detract significantly from the overall impact.
Pigs in Paradise is a compelling read that is a timely and relevant exploration of the perils of religious and political extremism, wrapped in a narrative that is as entertaining as it is enlightening. Whether you are a fan of satire or simply interested in a unique perspective on current issues, this novel is sure to provoke thought and discussion.
Author Bio:
Roger Maxson earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Indiana State University in 1987. Although he has continued to write over the years, which includes a feature-length screenplay, Pigs in Paradise is his first novel. He lives in Thailand with his wife Mong.

FULL BOOK TITLE: Lincoln’s Angel: The Rebecca Pomroy Story
AUTHOR NAME: DL Fowler
PUBLISHER NAME: Harbor Hill Publishing
LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Lincolns-Angel-Rebecca-Abraham-Stories/dp/B0CQLWYTXV/ref
Lincoln's Angel by DL Fowler is a historical novel that tells of the life of Rebecca Pomroy, a woman whose strength and kindness profoundly impacted the lives of many during the Civil War, including that of President Abraham Lincoln and his family.
The initial chapters of Lincoln's Angel depict the harsh living conditions before and during the Civil War, painting a picture of the era's struggles. The opening chapters, which focus on Rebecca's early years, her marriage, and her children, might initially seem disconnected from the more engaging narrative involving the Lincolns. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that these early experiences are crucial in understanding Rebecca. These formative years shaped her into the person capable of offering such profound support and compassion during the nation's darkest hours.
Rebecca's physical and spiritual struggles at the forefront of the story provide a compelling character study. Her personal hardships and how she draws strength from them to help others is one of the book's most touching themes. The narrative highlights her role as a nurse and a "mother" to wounded soldiers, offering readers profound insights into her empathetic and tireless work during the war.
The second part of the book is more interesting to me as it details Rebecca's unexpected and crucial role in the Lincoln family's lives. During a time when President Lincoln was struggling to keep the nation united, he faced the devastating loss of his son. Rebecca's presence and support during this period were instrumental.
DL Fowler presents a nuanced portrayal of Lincoln, moving beyond Lincoln's iconic image, showing how he relied on Rebecca's strength and compassion during troubled times. Fowler's portrayal enriches readers' understanding of Lincoln, highlighting how emotional support was crucial to his spirit and psyche during the monumental task of leading the country through the Civil War. This humanized view allows readers to see the connection between Lincoln's personal experiences and his leadership.
Lincoln's Angel is a bit of a slow starter but ultimately a rewarding read. It offers a unique perspective on a lesser-known figure who played a significant role during a critical period in American history. For readers interested in the human stories behind historical figures, DL Fowler's novel provides a moving and insightful exploration.
Author Bio:
DL Fowler graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in Humanities and earned top honors at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey CA. For over a decade, he has immersed himself in historical sites and museums, scoured obscure source documents, and mined for clues in neglected footnotes to assimilate Abraham Lincoln's inner world and discover people from the margins who lifted him in times of crisis. Two of Fowler’s novels are curated in the Lincoln Presidential Library. His Lincoln Lecture Series earned him the nickname—The Lincoln Guy.

Who is Driving Your Bus? by Shannon Sonnenberg, with vibrant illustrations by Birdie Rook, is an engaging and insightful children's book that expertly blends fun storytelling with important lessons on emotional regulation and self-control. Targeted at younger audiences and special needs groups, this imaginative tale invites readers to explore the dynamics of their emotions in a creative and relatable way.
The short story follows Niko, a character who discovers that his emotions are like passengers getting on and off a bus throughout his day. As Niko takes on the role of the bus attendant, responsible for seating these various passengers, chaos ensues when he fails to consider who should oversee driving the bus. Through this metaphor, Sonnenberg teaches children about the importance of thinking before speaking and acting, and about the need to manage their emotions thoughtfully.
The narrative's fast pace and relatable scenarios draw young readers into Niko's world, where they meet Happy, Silly, and Impulsive—emotions that they can easily identify with.
Parents and educators will find Who is Driving Your Bus? to be a valuable tool in teaching kids about self-regulation. The book emphasizes that while it’s normal to experience a wide range of emotions, it’s crucial to decide who is in control. This empowering message helps children understand that they can feel all their emotions, but they must make thoughtful decisions about how to react.
Sonnenberg’s approach provides a clear and memorable metaphor for kids to understand their emotional landscape. By visualizing emotions as bus passengers, children learn that while all emotions are valid and have a place, not every emotion should take the wheel. The book’s colorful and fun illustrations are a significant part of its appeal, capturing the energy and personality of each emotion. These visuals not only engage young readers but also help them to better understand and relate to the story's themes.
Who is Driving Your Bus?... a wonderfully crafted story that balances entertainment with education. It would make an excellent addition to any child's library.

Mohr, a distinguished figure in the legal field, served for twenty-six years as a judge on the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, and held the role of judge pro tem on the California Court of Appeal. Beyond the courtroom, Mohr’s scholarly contributions as a fellow at Harvard University's Advanced Leadership Initiative and his current position as senior editor of the Harvard ALI Social Impact Review highlight his multifaceted expertise. His literary prowess, evidenced by five Pushcart Prize nominations, enriches his narrative voice in Every Other Weekend. This memoir not only delves into the intricacies of his upbringing as the son of a Hollywood actor and a businessman but also underscores the impact of these formative experiences on his illustrious career and life.
Every Other Weekend redefines the narrative of a child of divorce, turning it into a coming-of-age story that spans seven decades. Anthony J. Mohr invites readers to journey with him from his perplexing childhood to an adulthood enriched by the lessons of fairness, adaptability, and family imparted by his two fathers. His esteemed career as a judge is a testament to the profound insights he garnered from these significant figures.
Set in the lively and diverse landscape of Southern California in the early sixties, the memoir chronicles the life of a young boy navigating the complexities of his parents' separation. Mohr's vivid and often lyrical prose captures the essence of the era and the personalities he encounters. His biological father, Gerry, a rugged B-movie actor, treats Tony as a buddy, while his stepfather, Stan, a disciplined businessman, offers a more detached but stabilizing influence. The tension between Gerry's laid-back, bohemian lifestyle and Stan's orderly, methodical approach profoundly shapes Tony's development, facilitating deep reader introspection. Reading Every Other Weekend was an enjoyable experience for me. Anthony J. Mohr masterfully created a complex window into the impact of divorce on a young boy and his subsequent growth into a resilient adult. I was captivated by Mohr's stunning recollection of his journey. The lessons learned from his story resonated deeply with me, as it highlighted the importance of fairness, flexibility, and the enduring nature of familial bonds. It is a truly great and enjoyable read.

Immortality Bytes is a blend of futuristic technology, ethical dilemmas, and high-stakes drama, all laced with a generous dose of satirical humor.
At its core, the novel explores a near-future world where AI, digital immortality, and corporate greed intertwine in a web of intrigue and suspense. The protagonist, Stu Reigns, an idealistic underachieving AI programmer and part-time influencer, finds himself caught in a quandary.
The story kicks off with a provocative premise: the idea of free money and a life of leisure—an attractive prospect, but with a catch. The allure fades when the reality of an AI-dominated future makes the idea of raising children almost impossible. This dilemma is at the heart of the novel, pushing Stu to make choices that will shape not only his future but the fate of humanity.
Stu's ex-girlfriend, Roxy Zhang, is on the brink of a breakthrough in electronic immortality, a concept that promises eternal life in a digital form. Her groundbreaking work catches the attention of powerful figures, including a sick, desperate oligarch who sees this technology as his only escape from impending conviction and death. The stakes are raised when a billionaire moves to buy Roxy’s company, igniting a dangerous rivalry that pulls Stu into a conspiracy he never wanted to be part of.
Abrams’ descriptive writing brings to life the various settings, from hightech labs to decaying urban landscapes, making the world of the novel feel both familiar and a bit unsettling. Aftermath: Into the Unknown is a story set in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world where survival is the only rule. Perfect for fans of dystopian fiction and those who enjoy a tense contemporary romance, this novel delivers a powerful story of endurance and unexpected love amidst chaos.
Robin, the protagonist, had her world shattered three years prior to the present setting when an asteroid struck Earth, erasing everything she once knew. At the brink of adulthood, Robin was forced to grow up fast, her dreams of attending Yale University obliterated in an instant. Now, she scavenges through the remnants of civilization, trying to care for her ailing grandfather in a world where innocence no longer exists.
Gibson's descriptive writing stands out as each apocalyptic scene is painted in vivid, dystopian hues. Whether it’s the rugged western mountains, expansive grasslands, serene rivers, or desolate, looted towns, the author brings every element of this shattered world to life. The settings are not mere backdrops but integral parts of the narrative, reflecting the desolation and the flickers of hope that drive the characters forward.
Robin's journey takes a turn when she meets Kory, a tough-as-nails "barbarian" boy who is part of a gang called the "Wings." Kory, a few years older than Robin, is a survivor in every sense of the word. Their relationship evolves from one of wary cooperation to something deeper, providing a ray of light in an otherwise bleak existence. The chemistry between them is slow burning but electric, adding an edge to the story as they navigate the dangers of their tumultuous journey together.
Aftermath is more than a story of survival; it's a tale of love, and the will to find meaning in a world where everything seems lost. Gibson has crafted a page turner in the post-apocalyptic genre, with characters that linger in your mind long after it is finished. This book is recommended for fans of dystopian fiction and anyone seeking a romance layered with depth and raw emotion.

AUTHOR NAME: Edward Beltran
PUBLISHER: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Fierce-Resilience-Combatting-Workplace-Conversation/dp/1523007141/
In Fierce Resilience, Ed Beltran, CEO of a leading leadership communication company, tackles one of the most pressing issues in today's workplace: stress. With technology accelerating demands and isolation on the rise, stress has become a pervasive force driving employees away from toxic environments. Beltran’s book offers a science-based solution, advocating for the power of conversation as a tool for reducing stress and fostering a thriving workplace culture.
Beltran's approach is grounded in rigorous research and practical application, making Fierce Resilience far more than a typical self-help guide. He introduces readers to the concept of "fierce resilience," a state of being that goes beyond mere coping mechanisms. This resilience is about gaining control over one's emotional health and making resilience a core component of an organization's DNA.
The book is divided into two parts. The first, "Understanding Fierce Resilience," delves into the foundations of resilience, linking it directly to workplace stress. Beltran redefines resilience not as a static trait but as a dynamic skill that can be cultivated through self-awareness and proactive engagement. One of the standout features of this section is the use of biometric intelligence to analyze and assess the root causes of stress. This innovative approach allows individuals to identify their unique stressors and develop targeted strategies to neutralize them.
Beltran also critiques traditional stress management techniques, arguing that they often fall short of addressing the underlying issues. Instead, he champions the use of "fierce conversations"—purposeful and candid dialogues that can transform not only individual stress levels but also the overall culture of an organization.
The second part of the book, "Practical Applications of Fierce Resilience," is where Beltran’s model truly shines. Each chapter provides a step-by-step guide on how to apply fierce resilience in real-world scenarios. From giving and receiving feedback to handling conflict and high-pressure situations, Beltran offers conversation models tailored to various workplace challenges. These models are not just theoretical; they are designed for immediate implementation, providing readers with actionable tools to foster resilience in themselves and their teams.
The book’s structure is clear and methodical, making it easy for readers to navigate through its content. The chapters build on each other, providing a comprehensive framework that can be adapted to various organizational contexts.
Whether you're a leader looking to support your team, an employee seeking to manage stress, or a professional interested in the science of resilience, this book offers invaluable insights and tools. Beltran’s emphasis on conversation as a catalyst for change is both timely and timeless, making Fierce Resilience an essential read in today’s high-pressure work environments.

FULL BOOK TITLE: The Child Catcher: A Fight for Justice and Truth
AUTHOR NAME: Andrew Bridge
PUBLISHER NAME: Regalo Press
LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Child-Catcher-Fight-Justice-Truth/dp/B0D12VT8KB/
The Child Catcher by Andrew Bridge is a searing, deeply personal exploration of the broken American foster care and adolescent mental health systems. From the gripping opening chapter, where Bridge recounts the graphic and heart-wrenching treatment of David Dolihite at the Eufaula Adolescent Center, the book pulls readers into a world of systemic abuse and neglect. The vivid depiction of Dolihite’s suffering not only shocks but sets the tone for the rest of the book, immediately highlighting the profound injustice endured by children in such institutions.
One of the most poignant threads running through The Child Catcher is Bridge’s relationship with his mother, Hope. A beautiful and loving woman, Hope’s life unraveled as she descended into schizophrenia, ultimately leading to Bridge being placed in foster care. He delicately and powerfully weaves her story throughout the book, offering readers a glimpse into his early years. Bridge paints a bittersweet portrait of a mother whose mental illness robbed him of a stable childhood and whose struggles led him to the infamous MacLaren Hall. The loss of Hope’s presence in his life is felt throughout the memoir, as he connects her illness to his own journey through the foster care system, adding emotional depth to his legal advocacy for other children similarly abandoned by fate.
This personal history informs his role in the longest-running mental health lawsuit in American history, which serves as the backbone of the narrative. The lawsuit was a David-and-Goliath battle between a small team of advocates and the State of Alabama over the Eufaula Adolescent Center. Much like MacLaren Hall, Eufaula operated in secrecy, luring parents into sending their children to a violent institution, where they struggled to get them back. Thousands of children passed through Eufaula’s doors, echoing Bridge’s own traumatic experience, and the parallels between his childhood and the suffering of those children drive his relentless pursuit of justice.
With endorsements from fellow civil rights lawyers and child welfare advocates, The Child Catcher stands as a significant contribution to the ongoing conversation about child welfare in America. It compels readers to rethink how we care for children and challenges us to fight for the reforms necessary to prevent future generations from enduring the same failures.
Bridge's writing is masterful. It blends raw emotion and meticulous detail, pulling the reader into the very heart of his experiences. His style is intimate, offering personal reflections that reveal deep vulnerability, while also relentless in its pursuit of truth, forcing the reader to confront the harsh realities of the child welfare system. Ultimately, Bridge’s story is one of personal redemption and the enduring belief that justice for vulnerable children is not only necessary but possible if we are willing to fight for it.

AUTHOR NAME: Kendis Gibson
PUBLISHER NAME: Post Hill Press
LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Five-Trips-Investigative-Journey-Psychedelic/dp/B0DB2PCVY9/
Five Trips: An Investigative Journey into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing, and Saving a Life is a raw and deeply moving memoir that chronicles the author’s struggle with depression and suicidal ideation, and his search for healing through unconventional methods. The book focuses on five pivotal experiences with psychedelics, each journey offering insights into the author’s mental health and emotional recovery.
The first trip, set in Hawaii, combines MDMA and therapy, leading to a breakthrough in forgiveness. This initial step into the world of psychedelics helps the author begin to confront the emotional scars of his past. The second trip, involving LSD, takes place in Arizona and opens his mind to deeper layers of self-awareness and the complexity of his inner struggles. The third journey, to Belize with psilocybin, serves as a turning point, helping him confront unresolved trauma and embrace the possibility of healing.
In Peru, the author undergoes his fourth trip with Ayahuasca, a spiritual experience that offers profound emotional release and spiritual insight. Finally, the fifth trip, guided by Dr. Scott-Ward with psilocybin, cements the author’s journey toward peace and reconciliation with his past, providing closure in areas where traditional methods had failed him.
What distinguishes Five Trips is the author’s perspective as a Black man, sharing his experiences in a field often dominated by white narratives. His story not only highlights the complexities of trauma and healing but also addresses the lack of representation in mental health and psychedelic literature. With a balance of vulnerability, humor, and reflection, the author takes readers on an emotional and spiritual journey, revealing the unconventional ways he found healing. While the book does not advocate psychedelics as a universal solution, it offers a powerful testament to the possibilities of alternative therapies and the importance of self-discovery in the face of deep personal pain.
Five Trips is a compelling narrative about healing, trauma, and the courage it takes to confront one’s darkest moments in pursuit of peace.
